New Sunday Brunch Market Brings Music, Makers, and Meaningful Community to Downtown Ashland

Before most of Ashland had poured its first cup of coffee, artists, makers, musicians, and entrepreneurs were already rolling into Studio54 Event Space  adjoined to Café54 Brunch & Breakfast.

Some arrived before sunrise. By 5 a.m., vendor booths were beginning to take shape. Handmade jewelry found its place beside locally baked treats. Soft knitted bags hung beside colorful artwork inspired by Ashland's beloved Center of the Universe. Tarot cards, pet treats, leather handbags, children's accessories, and handcrafted gifts transformed the event space into something that felt less like a market and more like a neighborhood gathering waiting to happen.

By 8 a.m., the first-ever Sunday Brunch Market had officially begun.

Throughout the morning, the aroma of fresh coffee drifted through Studio54 as guests wandered from booth to booth, discovering artists they had never met and reconnecting with neighbors they were delighted to see again.

Then came the music.

Local musician Roger Reynolds entertained visitors with acoustic favorites, quick wit, and an endless supply of classic dad jokes while performing on behalf of CJ's Thumbs Up, an organization dedicated to supporting families with hospitalized children through kindness and community connection.

When Reynolds launched into Walking on Sunshine, the room transformed once again.

Guests clapped. They laughed. They sang along.

It became the perfect soundtrack as LouAffirms officially celebrated its ribbon cutting with the Town of Ashland's now-famous golden ceremonial scissors—a joyful milestone for married creative partners JK Royston and Lou Keeton, whose shared dream of making storytelling more accessible for small businesses and nonprofits officially took center stage.

For the couple, however, the ribbon cutting represented much more than opening a business.

It represented the beginning of a philosophy.

Long before they met, each had built a career helping others tell meaningful stories.

Royston established himself as an accomplished web designer, award-winning podcast producer, musician, producer, and creative technologist whose work has helped organizations communicate with greater clarity and creativity.

Meanwhile, Keeton built a career spanning more than fourteen years as an award-winning published author, photojournalist, marketing strategist, promoter, public relations professional, social media manager, and community event producer. Her passion has always centered on one simple idea: every person, organization, and neighborhood has a story worth celebrating.

When they met, those complementary paths quickly became a shared mission.

Together they founded LouAffirms, a full-service creative storytelling studio dedicated to helping small businesses and nonprofits experience greater ease, affirmation, and amplification through thoughtful marketing, web design, audio production, public relations, event production, content creation, and social media management.

They affectionately describe themselves as "friendly neighborhood storytellers."

Sunday Brunch Markets are perhaps the most visible expression of that philosophy.

Rather than creating another shopping event, LouAffirms envisioned a weekly tradition where neighbors could gather over breakfast, discover local artists, support entrepreneurs, hear live music, and experience the creativity already flourishing throughout Central Virginia.

Every Sunday promises a fresh collection of vendors, ensuring that no two weekends are exactly alike while giving local makers an affordable, welcoming place to share their work with the community.

The markets are held inside Studio54 Event Space, connected to Café54 Brunch & Breakfast, allowing visitors to enjoy a leisurely breakfast before browsing handcrafted goods, meeting artists, and spending an unhurried Sunday morning with friends and family—rain or shine.

"We don't simply want people to come shop," said Keeton. "We hope they'll make Sunday mornings a tradition. Come for breakfast. Stay for the artists. Meet someone new. Leave feeling more connected to your community than when you arrived."

Judging by the smiles, conversations, and spontaneous singalongs during the inaugural market, that tradition may already be taking root.

Sunday Brunch Markets will continue every Sunday through December 2026 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Studio54 Event Space inside Café54 Brunch & Breakfast in historic Downtown Ashland.

Each week welcomes new artists, makers, musicians, nonprofits, and entrepreneurs, making every visit a new opportunity to discover something remarkable while supporting the local businesses that make communities thrive.

Sunday Brunch Markets prove that sometimes the best mornings begin with breakfast. And sometimes they become the start of something much bigger.
